MacMasters Beach Surf Life Saving Club began in 1945 from a conversation at a local Progress Association meeting, with its colours humorously inspired by a Kraft cheese
box. From the first rescue by Club Captain Harry Lee to the ongoing dedication of generations of his family, the club’s rich history is built on community, courage and commitment.
The legacy of Life Member Alan Whelpton, who started at MacMasters and went on to transform surf life saving nationally and internationally, is a testament to the club’s enduring impact.
With the introduction of the Duke of Edinburgh Award in 1999, MacMasters became the first surf club in Australia to run the program, further linking our values with youth leadership and
community service.
Today, MacMasters Beach SLSC thrives as a volunteer-run, family-oriented club that champions teamwork, resilience and lifesaving excellence. With achievements ranging from world competition medals to hosting vibrant community groups, the club has grown while maintaining its inclusive and traditional spirit.
Thanks to committed members, supportive sponsors like Belle Property, and strong partnerships with local organisations, the club continues to be a community hub. As we celebrate our 80 years – complete with clubhouse upgrades, new Life Members, and a vibrant volunteer culture – MacMasters looks ahead with pride and confidence to a future that will surely see the club through to its centenary and beyond.

80th Anniversary Luncheon
We had a truly memorable June long weekend celebrating the 80th Anniversary of MacMasters Beach Surf Life Saving Club. The celebrations began with an invitation-only luncheon to honour our Life Members, valued sponsors, local community groups, and special guests from government and surf life saving. It was a fitting tribute to those who have supported and shaped our club over the decades.
80th Anniversary Gala Dinner
The festivities continued with a sold-out Gala Dinner, where members and friends came together to enjoy a delicious three-course meal and share stories from the past 80 years. The evening was filled with laughter, memories, and a strong sense of community, making it a truly special occasion to celebrate the remarkable history and spirit of our club. To the 80th Committee: Nadine, Nerida, Jan, Pat, Vince, Elaine, Peter, Jane, Lyn and Amanda – your commitment and passion have left a lasting legacy. Thank you!
Macs Senior Presentation
Our Senior Presentation recognised outstanding service, including the awarding of 100% Patrol Attendance jackets, which proudly featured our new logo and the 80th Anniversary emblem. Our dedicated volunteer lifesavers completed a remarkable 6,010.5 patrol hours, with 95 members achieving 100% attendance!
Accolades continued with National Medals, impressive surf sports performances, education awards, and our club’s major honours. Among our standouts:
→ The Fat Dads earned a Silver Medal at the World Titles in the Reserve Men Surf Boat
→ Lyn Drummond took home three Bronze Medals at State for the Masters 1km Beach Run, Beach Sprint and Beach Flags.

Macs Election Meeting
The Club’s 80th Election Meeting saw the appointment of a job-share role for the Director of Education position. Thank you to Warren Watkins, who will step down at the AGM on the 17th August, and welcome to our new incumbants, Lyn Drummond and Pat Roberts.
We Never Really Turn ‘Off’
Technically this is the ‘off season’ for us, however the Board still meets monthly, the Annual Report is being compiled and the planning is beginning for next season. Please consider volunteering with us, more hands the better!
